A comparative study on drying of basil leaves CIGR Journal
Parmar, Mansukhlal Ramjibhai; Kumpavat, Mahendrasinh T.; Doshi, Jayesh Sevantilal; Kapdi, Shyamsundar S..
Basil is a popular aromatic and annual herb growing in many regions of the world.  Immediately after its harvesting, the highly perishable raw material, i.e. leaves, have to be preserved against deterioration and spoilage.  More often, during peak period, most of the crop is lost/wasted due to lack of proper post-harvest processing techniques.  Drying is by far the most widely used treatment, which needs to be performed very carefully and preciously so as to preserve the aroma and color of the leaves.  Various drying treatments and experimental methods viz., solar drying, tray drying, vacuum drying and fluidized bed drying were carried out at the temperatures of45°C,55°Cand65°Cto find and suggest the optimum drying condition for acquiring quality dried...

Coefficients of repair and maintenance costs of self-propelled combine harvesters in Italy CIGR Journal
Calcante, Aldo; Fontanini, Luca; Mazzetto, Fabrizio.
Purchasing and maintaining agricultural machines are two of the most considerable costs of the agricultural sector, which includes farm equipment manufacturers, farm contractors and farms.  In this context, repair and maintenance costs (R&M costs) generally constitute 10%-15% of the total costs related to agricultural equipment and tend to increase with the age of the equipment; hence, an important consideration in farm management is the optimal time for equipment replacement.  R&M cost estimation models, calculated as a function of accumulated working hours, are usually developed by ASAE/ASABE for the agricultural situation in the United States, which is considerably different than agricultural context of other countries.  So, the goal of this...

Current status and overview of farm mechanization in Pakistan – A review CIGR Journal
Rehman, Tanzeel ur; Usman Khan, Muhammad; Tayyab, Muhammad; Waqar Akram, Muhammad; Faheem, Muhammad.
Economic growth in Pakistani agricultural sector lags behind growth in industry and services, creating an ever widening rural-urban income fissure.  Agricultural mechanization plays a strategic role in improving agricultural production and productivity in developing countries. The average farm size in Pakistan is small (2.5 acres) and small and marginal land holdings (less than 2.0 ha) account for 85% of land holdings.  Mechanizing small and non-contiguous group of small farms is against ‘economies of scale’ for individual ownership of farm machinery. It was observed that there was a direct correlation between farm power availability and productivity during the past six decades. Being an agrarian country, mechanization can be called as back bone of...

Design Modification of Conventional Wheat Straw Chopper CIGR Journal
Ghafoor, Abdul.
Agriculture has straight and indirect contribution to boost the economy of Pakistan. Wheat and paddy are among the major rotational crops of Pakistan. The straw management in combine harvested in wheat fields is a major problem. In the past the residual wheat straw in convectional harvesting was burnt in the field which resulted losses of 80% of Nitrogen, 25% P, 21% K and 4-60% S. To overcome this problem, locally available wheat straw chopper is used for cutting and collecting the wheat straw left behind the combine harvesters. These locally developed wheat straw choppers are heavy in weight having lower machine efficiency. A wheat straw chopper has been modified using locally available materials making it light weight and more efficient. The performance...

Design steps of narrow tillage tools for draught reduction and increased soil disruption – a review CIGR Journal
Odey, Simon Ogbeche.
Design steps of narrow tillage tools for draught reduction and increased soil disruption was reviewed. Narrow tillage tools are the main components of conservation tillage and soil compaction alleviation equipment. Literature regarding dynamic behaviour and step-by-step design of narrow tillage tools is scarce. A better understanding of soil dynamic behaviour and designing steps will help in the design of new tool shapes which will reduce tool draught, energy demand and increased soil disruption over a wide speed range. At the same time, narrow tools disturb less soil, ideally only the minimum necessary to establish a crop. Narrow tillage tools such as subsoilers have gain much ground in their application for alleviating soil compaction; and are attracting...
